Tunnel Books: A Journey Through Three-Dimensional Storytelling 24th May 2025

Step into the world of tunnel books, where history, art, and creativity converge to craft immersive three-dimensional scenes. In this course, we'll delve into the origins and evolution of tunnel books, tracing their lineage back to the Renaissance and the marvels of the camera obscura. Participants will embark on a hands-on exploration, learning the techniques needed to create their own tunnel books while uncovering the optical illusions and wonders that have inspired artists for centuries.
In this course you will be introduced to:
Materials needed for creating tunnel books, including paper, cutting tools, and adhesives.
Guided instruction on assembling the layers and creating the intricate scenes within your tunnel book.
By the end of this course, participants will have gained a deep appreciation for the artistry and history behind tunnel books, as well as the skills and confidence to continue exploring this captivating medium on their own. Join us on this journey through the layers of imagination and creativity!
This course requires some pre- class preparations. You will be sent a set of illustrations to print out and colour with watercolours or coloured pencils.
Please note:
Suitable for complete beginners includes tea, coffee and biscuits.
All materials and tools provided.
This is a technical workshop, anyone with enthusiasm for making books and sewing is welcome to join in. No experience is necessary, but the workshop requires a certain level of capability and confidence in using sharp instruments and being able to follow verbal instructions is expected.
