Coptic Binding with a structural endband - Medieval Bindings Series 1.01 - 6th July 2025
Join our next class on the 6th July 2025 - Very limited places
Time: 10am - 2pm
Cost: $200 Wild Binder, $300 non-member
The Copts, early Christians from Egypt, first developed this bookbinding method in the 2nd century AD. The most common form of the Coptic stitch uses thread to bind multiple folded sheets of paper together with a chain stitch, a technique renowned for its flexibility, durability, and the ability to allow books to lie completely flat when open.
The model we teach is a streamlined adaptation of a medieval binding, reduced to its ancient, essential components: paper, linen, and wood. While it retains the traditional Coptic chain stitch, this version incorporates a unique twist; a structural thread line and a decorative Coptic headband.
These elements are sewn directly onto rescued dictionaries and Australian hardwood boards, specially commissioned for this series. The result is a refined technique that creates a binding that is not only durable and highly flexible but also beautifully sculptural in appearance.
