A Solander box, also known as a clamshell case, is a crucial protective container for preserving valuable manuscripts, maps, prints, documents, and books.

Typically employed in archives, print rooms, and libraries, this box is constructed with board, featuring three fixed side sections on both the lid and bottom. The lid is designed slightly larger to allow for nesting when closed.

In a workshop led by Isabelle, participants will learn the meticulous process of crafting a customised Solander box tailored to fit you specific book. Through step-by-step instructions, Isabelle will guide you in mastering precise measurements and techniques, ensuring that each box fits snugly and provides optimal protection for its contents.

You will gain hands-on experience in measuring accurately and assembling the box, acquiring valuable skills in book preservation and craftsmanship under Isabelle's expert guidance. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn a time-honoured skill and create a functional yet beautiful container for cherished books and documents.

Please bring your own book, must be around A5 or smaller in size.

Please note:

  • Suitable for those who have completed beginner level box making. Includes tea, coffee and biscuits.

  • All materials and tools provided.

  • This is a technical workshop, anyone with enthusiasm for making books and sewing is welcome to join in. The workshop requires a certain level of capability and confidence in using sharp instruments and being able to follow verbal instructions is expected.
