Owl Post - April 2025
We’re often asked, “How do I get started? Which course should I take first?” The answer is simple: begin at the beginning, with our Chunky Journal Workshop.
This essential class lays the groundwork for understanding basic book structures. You’ll learn to fold, sew, and cut with confidence, working with a thoughtfully selected range of materials to customise your journal’s design and express your individual style.
Traditional bookbinding is a craft that demands precision and care. True mastery develops through patience, practice, and repetition. This workshop offers the ideal starting point for anyone ready to start on a skilful and rewarding bookbinding journey.
Start at the very beginning…
The Case-Binding
Case-binding is one of the most widely used bookbinding style. It forms the foundation for understanding book structure and material handling; and is a prerequisite for many other traditional binding techniques. With its combination of strength, and versatility, case-binding is the technique behind most commercial hardcover books you'll find on the shelf.
At Owl & Lion Bindery, we teach both flat-back and rounded-back case binding styles, using cloth, paper, and leather.
The flat-back style is ideal for journals and notebooks, particularly those intended for everyday writing.
The rounded-back style features a gently curved spine, lending your book a timeless, classic character.
By the end of each of these workshops, you’ll walk away with a sturdy, beautifully bound book, crafted entirely by your own hands.
